MG, guess what? I had Sears come out to check my a/c. Found out the heat pump is 12 years old and the return (or whatever that inside air exchange unit is called) is the original one that came with the house - 1974! The heat pump is more powerful than the exchange so that's why the bloody thing just keeps running and the second level isn't cooling. Sad

I spoke to the cleaning auntie.

Auntie is very consiencitious and does throw the garbage bag away properly; she was also helping an old uncle around our office neighbourhood collecting cans.

So this NEA, Sembcorp Waste, dunno what else contractor guy is really bull shitting.

Even better, when I was coming up, he was trying to talk loudly on the handphone pretending that he is talking business with officers at his 'NEA office'.

My collegues did noticed that the guy got nervous and panicked when I demanded from him his particulars.

Should I call police?

The estimate the Sears guy gave me is *gulp* $5300 after a $250 promo discount, a 10% first visit discount and a 10% assoc. discount, for the middle of the range model. I'm calling a few other companies for estimates too. The thing is, I'm very familiar with the Sears warranty and I know it's almost all-encompassing. I'm trying to educate myself online, re: the competition's warranty.

And yes, I'm replacing it all. Oh and that inside unit is the air handler.

just throwing ideas in the air: at that price, couldn't you go with a regular furnace/air conditioner combo installation?

I'm getting a heat pump, which provides both heating and cooling, so it's a combo system in essence. The air handler has to match the heat pump so as to circulate conditioned air throughout the house. The more efficient the handler, the less the heat pump has to work.

Sorry if I'm talking down to you, it's really not my intention.
